Renewable origin

From a rice by-product to engineered wax performance

Rice bran wax is obtained during refining of rice bran oil through cooling, crystallization and separation. Its long-chain fatty acid ester composition is comparable in important ways to carnauba and montan waxes.

Building on wax-processing experience, China United Chemical International Company Ltd. developed chemically modified rice bran wax grades intended for wider use in demanding industrial formulations. For international business, the company now operates under the name Orychem.

Modification pathway

A controlled path from crude wax to functional grades

Chemical modification removes impurities and creates products suited for selected formulation and processing requirements.

  1. 01 Rice bran oil

    Cooling and crystallization separate crude rice bran wax.

  2. 02 Hydrolysis and oxidation

    Residual oil, pigment and odor-causing material are addressed.

  3. 03 Functional modification

    Esterification or saponification develops targeted behavior.

  4. 04 Bio-R® grades

    Oxidized, esterified, saponified and micropowder products.

Designed with global market access in mind

The company brochure states that REACH registration has been completed for oxidized rice bran waxes and that Orychem Co., LTD. has played a leading role in registrations for esterified and saponified rice bran waxes.

It also notes that European food-contact certification is being pursued for selected esterified grades.
